Welcome to the new SCHT website. Thanks to the creative Banjo Design House for making the process as smooth and fun as possible.

It’s not uncommon for patients to say they have never heard of a ‘Hand Therapist’ until they had to see one. So, what is Hand Therapy?

  • A Hand Therapist is either a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist who specialises in the assessment and treatment of upper limb injuries and conditions.

  • Hand Therapists have in depth knowledge of the anatomy and biomechanics of the hand and arm. This is essential in accurately diagnosing injuries and providing specific treatment.

  • Hand Therapists are skilled in fabricating various custom-made splints and orthoses. This includes thermoplastic splints and fibreglass casts, along with other materials such as neoprene and leather.

  • Hand Therapists work closely with plastic and orthopaedic, specialist hand surgeons, along with other health professionals including general practitioners, sports medicine physicians, pain specialists and allied health colleagues.

  • Hand Therapists have specialist knowledge in post-operative care following hand and wrist surgery. This includes wound care and scar management, swelling management, customised splint fabrication and specialist exercise rehabilitation.

  • Hand Therapists understand the important role and function of hands in day to day life. This includes the role of the hands in activities of daily living, work, sports and hobbies.

  • Hand Therapists partake in regular professional development to ensure they are up to date within the profession.

  • Hand Therapists treat a wide variety of injuries, click here to see a list of common conditions treated.

If you have an injury or pain affecting your hands, wrist or elbow please book an appointment with a Hand Therapist so we can help you get back to doing what you love most! Book online or call (03) 4216 6900 to make an appointment at SCHT.
